10 Tips for Glowing Skin This Winter

When you think of winter in Denver, you think of skiing, snowboarding, sledding, skating, and a whole lot of snow! But as much fun as all those wintertime activities can be, there is one small problem: the havoc it can wreak on your skin!  The cold air can result in chapped, red skin on both your face and hands. And even if you choose to hibernate and stay inside, the heater is there to dry out your skin.  So what can you do to protect your skin? Take a look at these top 10 tips from our team below to help you achieve glowing skin this winter:

Moisturize!

The moisturizing routine you used during the months probably isn’t going to cut it now that winter has arrived. Thicker moisturizers with peptides are a great choice, since they lock in your natural oils and help with anti-aging. If you have chapped skin, oil-based products are perfect for helping your skin to heal. If you live in in a cold climate, we have a lot of great solutions to help with dry skin.

Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher

One of the best parts about living in Denver is that there are outdoor activities all year long. However, people often don't associate the winter with sunburns and will neglect to put on sunscreen. With all of that snow reflecting back on your face you can get some pretty bad burns. Make sure that you're maintaining your daily sunscreen regimen all winter long and protect your skin against unnecessary sun damage.  A warm scarf is the perfect, stylish solution for limiting exposure to the sun and other elements.

Avoid long, hot showers (or extended stays in a bath)!

We totally get it! Nothing feels better after a long day on the slopes than a long, hot shower – or an even longer soak in the hot tub. However, when the water is really hot, the water breaks down your natural oils, leaving your skin dry and dehydrated.

Regular facials.

Regular facials are excellent for treating overexposed, dry skin. We’re particularly fond of the Hydrafacial since it both exfoliates and hydrates your skin.

Exfoliate… but not too much

Exfoliating is a great solution for whisking away those dead skin cells. Just avoid over-doing it. Once or twice a week is typically ideal for maintaining the benefits of exfoliation without drying out your skin, although it does vary depending on the type of exfoliator.  The m.merge Bamboo Face Scrub is great for gently removing dead skin and hydrating with coconut and bamboo powder. The IS Clinical ® Tri-Active Exfoliant is also a great option. It has peptides and is designed to smooth, brighten and soften your skin.

Use a humidifier

Designed to increase moisture levels by emitting water into the air, humidifiers can have an enormous impact on dry skin. They can help with more than just that, though. The National Institutes of Health recommend humidifiers for relieving the symptoms of the common cold, flu, and sinus infections, as well as dry nasal passages, cracked lips and nosebleeds from the dry air.

Hydrate from within

Because you don't perspire as much during the winter months, many people are often bad about drinking water consistently. Make sure that you're hydrating from within by drinking plenty of water. Also, eat foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that help to keep your skin stay well lubricated and maintain that youthful glow.

Get your beauty sleep

This isn’t your typical skin care tip; however, sleep is the best way for your skin and body to repair and regenerate. When it gets dark out, your brain produces more melatonin to make you tired. With shorter days during the winter, you may notice that you’re getting tired earlier than you do during the summer. Take a cue from nature and get to bed sooner. Your skin and your body will thank you, trust us!

Add a serum to the mix

Give your moisturizer some help by applying a serum beforehand. Serums deliver more advanced, concentrated formulas that your skin loves because they have a smaller molecular structure and are able to better penetrate to the dermis. Serums pack in beneficial ingredients like antioxidants such as pomegranate extract and vitamin C, which protect against sun damage and fight the free radicals that cause skin aging. Some serums also contain vitamin E as well as retinol, which is great for anyone with oily or acne-prone skin.  If you need a serum with antioxidants, the SkinCeuticals® CE Ferulic® is a great choice. This antioxidant treatment contains 15% L-ascorbic acid, 1% alpha tocopherol, and 0.5% ferulic acid.  Because serums can penetrate more deeply than traditional moisturizers, they are able to deliver a high concentration of these active ingredients. This makes them a valuable tool for targeting specific skincare concerns, such as fine lines and wrinkles.  If you’re looking for a good serum to help combat the winter weather, we highly recommend the Hydrating B5 Gel, an oil-free hydrating gel designed to restore moisture, or the 15% Professional C Serum from Obagi, which is excellent for fighting free radical damage.

Repair summer damage (or prep for the summer)

Since most of us spend less time out in the sun during the cold, winter months, it’s a great time to take advantage of the treatments that you don’t want during “bikini season.”  For example, the winter months are the best time of year to remove pigmentation from summer damage. It’s also a great time to start laser hair removal treatments, since it’s most effective when your skin is lighter. Since it also takes multiple treatments to achieve the desired results, it’s best to start your treatments in the winter in order to be ready to hit the beaches by summer.  For even more tips, the U.S. National Institutes of Health has more on keeping your skin healthy.  If you’re still searching for the perfect gift for the holidays, consider giving the gift of beautiful .
