What is an IPL Photofacial?

Transform Your Skin

The Intense Pulse Light Photofacial procedure is designed to transform the appearance of red, pigmented skin to help you achieve the beautiful, radiant complexion you’ve been longing for. If you are tired of living with sun damaged skin, rosacea or hyperpigmentation and are looking for a safe and effective treatment, the Photofacial treatment may be exactly what you need.

Not to be confused with laser treatments, the Photofacial reduces many of the effects of aging and increases the production collagen using pulses of light.

Fast and virtually pain free, it’s not uncommon for patients to schedule this procedure during their lunch break. Unlike more invasive procedures that require a recovery period, patients who receive Photofacials are able to return to most of their normal daily activities immediately after the treatment is finished. That said, we recommend that patients avoid working outside for 24 hours or doing anything that ads heat to the skin.

Typically each patient will receive a series of three to five treatments performed at four to six week intervals. The treatments, however, are customized for each patient’s skin type and condition, which means you’ll achieve the best possible results for your individual needs.

FAQs

What is a Photofacial?

The Photofacial is a non-invasive treatment that uses intense pulses of light to reduce or eliminate redness from rosacea, hyperpigmentation, broken capillaries, age spots, sun spots and discoloration.  The pulses of light are designed to target the irregularities and smooth out the skin’s tone and texture, leaving patients with younger, healthier-looking skin.

Treatments also encourage the production of collagen, which can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving the skin smoother.

How are the treatments performed?

A lotion is applied to the area that will be treated and patients are given protective eyewear. During treatment the IPL device is applied to the skin, delivering pulses of light. Treatments typically take approximately 30 minutes, depending on the area(s) treated, after which time patients can return to most of their normal daily activities.

When can I expect to see results?

With each treatment, you can expect to see a gradual decrease in redness. If you have visible sun damage, you should notice a gradual improvement in skin texture as well as a decrease in fine wrinkles and sun spots.

Does it hurt?

We provide AOB ice packs to ensure our patients are as comfortable as possible, and for this reason most experience little to no discomfort. The few patients who do experience discomfort describe it as feeling like the mild snapping of rubber bands against the skin's surface.

What kind of results can I expect?

While you won’t notice a dramatic difference overnight, you will see a gradual improvement in the appearance of your skin over time, with the greatest results apparent when you complete the series of treatments coupled with an LG or HydraFacial MD® treatment. Hyperpigmentation falls off within 10 days or is absorbed by the body.

How many treatments will I need?

We recommend three to five treatments per patient depending on the area treated, hair growth cycle, type of hair and skin type. For best results, more than one treatment is always recommended. During your initial consultation, your health care provider will customize your treatment plan to meet your needs.

How long does it take?

You should anticipate that each treatment will take approximately 30 minutes. However, treatment times will vary somewhat depending on the size of the area you’re treating.

How long will my results last?

While the treatment is designed to permanently improve the appearance of your skin, the amount of time your results will last depends on the number of treatments the you received and if you stayed on track during the LHR cycles.

Should I expect any side effects following treatment?

Some patients experience redness that can be compared to a mild sunburn, and possibly some swelling. These side effects typically go away within one or two hours, although they can last up to 24 hours.

How quickly will I recover?

The great thing about Photofacial treatments is that they are completely non-invasive. While patients do occasionally experience some redness and swelling immediately following the procedure, this goes away within an hour or two. Patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately following treatments.

Who are the best candidates?

If you have redness or pigmented skin as a result of acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation or sun damage, you are a good candidate for an Photofacial. Other candidates include people who are showing signs of aging but want to avoid the invasiveness and healing times associated with laser resurfacing or chemical peels.  If you have dark or deeply tanned skin, you may not be a good candidate for a Photofacial treatment, although this is best determined during a consultation with a trained skin care specialist.

How much do IPL Photofacial treatments cost?

Pricing starts at $289 and varies depending on the area that you want to treat. We do recommend more than one treatment for best results.
