  • Superfood Friday: 8 Ways Green Tea Can Save Your Skin and Health

Green tea is probably one of the most recognizable items that we've mentioned on Superfood Friday, but do you actually know the benefits? As one of the most popular teas – hot or cold – green tea has many health and skin benefits. The next time you're ordering a drink, you might want to order a green tea, because chances are that it'll help you live longer, give you a healthy glow, and help protect your skin from sun damage.

Here are 8 health benefits of green tea:

    1. Prevents skin damage. Green tea contains polyphenol, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Antioxidants and anti-inflammatories protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays.

    2. Decreases wrinkles. Anti-inflammatories and anti-oxidants can also fight back against aging. If you have wrinkles, green tea is said to help clear and plump your skin.

    3. Weight loss. The polyphenol in green tea also increases metabolism, which burns your body fat.

    4. Improves your cholesterol levels. Decrease your bad cholesterol levels and increase the good cholesterol with green tea.

    5. Gives you energy. If you need a pick-me-up during the day, green tea can be a natural way of gaining energy. The caffeine in green tea can give you a boost, but be sure not to drink it two hours before bedtime.

    6. Lowers risk of cancer. Green tea contains antioxidants, which can prepare your body to fight off cancer including breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer.

    7. Protects the brain. Catechin compounds are found in green tea, which can have various protective effects on neurons and potentially lower the risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

    8. Dental health. Catechins can also kill bacteria, which means that green tea can fight bacteria in your mouth, providing you with better dental health and also provides protection against viruses.

    the REVIEWS

"Great event. The staff at MPulse were so professional and helpful. The salon itself was was so welcoming. I felt as I would be in good hands or at least my face would be. I really enjoyed the demos especially the microdermabrasion. I've been on the fence about skin care treatments and now that I've seen some administered  and the procedures explained I'm anxious for my next visit to MPulse, without the crowd of course. Heli, another fantastic job! Those Trailercakes YUM I was trying to resist but I'm glad I didn't. Great goodie bag I'm trying the masque tonight." - Yolanda M., Irving, TX

"Come and get your photofacial on! We've been spoiled as Yelpers in Dallas lately with multiple events at spas. This was my first visit to MPulse and I was excited to check the place out. And while I didn't get to actually expereince one of the facials myself, it was cool to watch others in their experiences. I sipped on white wine while we watched Piyushia get her microdermabrasion. Everyone looked so refreshed afterwards. The food and wine were delicious and the MPulse staff was beyond gracious. I was thoroughly convinced to make my appointment for my own photofacial that evening. I'm excited to return. Great event all around!" - Benjamin L., Dallas, TX

"I had a great time at the Yelp CMYE at M Pulse! I have always wondered about a couple of the treatments, so it was great to see them performed in person, and to get feedback on what it was like. The space is absolutely gorgeous and very relaxing. Oh, and the Goodie Bags were great. I can't wait to try the face mask this weekend. I also love the cute mini cupcakes by Trailer Cakes. Thank you so much Heli and M Pulse for a great time!" - Keli M., Dallas, TX

  • Voluma: 6 Facts About the Newest AOB Med Spa Filler

On April 1st, AOB Med Spa proudly welcomed Botox and fillers to our Colorado locations in addition to the other services we offer. We talked with Sarah Kurts, Director of Cosmetic Injectables, to give some insight about what it's like to receive Botox and fillers, who it's for, and how it works. Read the interview HERE.
But before coming into one of our Colorado locations to get started on Botox and fillers, it's also important to know about the product itself. We spoke with our lead cosmetic injector to find out a little more information about Voluma, one of the unique fillers offered at AOB Med Spa.

6 Facts about Voluma, AOB Med Spa's newest filler:

    1. Formally named Juvederm Voluma XC, this hyaluronic acid filler was approved by the FDA in October 2013.
    2. It is manufactured by Allergan, the company that brought us Botox.
    3. The US has been awaiting this product for 5 years; although it's new to us, it's not new to the rest of the world and has been approved in 72 countries.
    4. Voluma is unique in that it's the first filler to be FDA-approved to treat the cheeks.  In fact, I wouldn't even call it a filler as it does not fill lines. This product is a volumizer.  As we age, unfortunately we lose facial volume from fat loss and bone absorption. Voluma serves to replace this volume by providing lift in the cheek area.
    5. Voluma is FDA approved to last up to 2 years – this is twice to four times the FDA-approved duration of any other filler, and is exceptionally long for a hyaluronic filler.
    6. Voluma contains lidocaine, a numbing medication, which helps to make the injection process more comfortable.

  • IPL laser Hair Removal vs. Shaving and Waxing: Which is Better?

Spring is upon us and summer is quickly approaching, which means that the short shorts, flowy dresses and knee-length skirts will come out of hiding.  For most women, hair removal can be a big factor in feeling confident and beautiful in all these skin baring clothes. At times the fight against unwanted hair can seem endless. From creams to waxing to IPL laser hair removal, finding the best solution can require some research.

  • Superfood Friday: How Eating Dark Chocolate Can Improve Your Health

Women and their chocolate: It's a relationship that many of us have tried to end, but it seems that there's always a point where we give in and need a chocolate fix. But instead of feeling bad about yourself after indulging, there are health benefits you can cash in on from eating some of that creamy, chocolatey goodness.

When it comes to figuring out these health benefits, you have to first start with the variety of chocolate you're eating. There are pretty much no benefits coming from a Hershey's milk chocolate bar, so we have to look in the other direction.

Dark chocolate might have an acquired taste, especially the kind that can be good for your overall health and skin. If you're going to hunt for dark chocolate that you can count in benefits instead of a few extra pounds, the cacao percentage is important. Try finding a dark chocolate that's 70% cacao and above. Once you hit that number, you can feel great about what you're eating. And here's why.

    1. Reduces stress. After a long day at work or after a break-up, you can feel good about yourself while indulging in a little dark chocolate. Studies show that it can actually reduce stress and raise metabolism levels. So take that, stress.

    2. Lowers blood pressure. Who would have thought that candy can actually lower blood pressure? When eaten a small amount of high cacao-content dark chocolate, those arteries can stretch and open up, while lowering your bloog pressure and making your heart healthy and happy.

    3. Antioxidants. Dark chocolate is full of antioxidants, which can improve your health, mood and even prevent you from unwanted effects of aging.

    4. Contains vitamins and minerals. Potassium, copper, magnesium and iron are all found in dark chocolate. Help keep up your heart health with the copper and potassium, and up your energy levels with the iron.

    5. Positive skin benefits. Dark chocolate contains flavonols, which can delay the aging process in your skin while also protecting your skin against the sun. It also contains free radicals, which can increase the blood flow in your body leaving you with a healthy glow.

  • Before and After: One Woman's Quest to Remove Dark Spots

When looking into getting treatments for skin issues like wrinkles, scarring and dark spots, it’s helpful to hear first-hand what the experience is like.

Today we’re introducing you to Jane, an AOB Med Spa employee who decided to try the IPL Treatment, hoping it would help clear up her dark spots. After receiving two treatments, Jane has already seen results and is excited to share what it’s like to receive IPL.

We’ll be checking in with Jane to see her progress, but let’s see how her skin has changed after just two treatments

When did you start to notice your dark spots?

Jane: I’ve had “freckles” since I was a teenager but it has gotten worse as I got older.  Around my mid 40s, I have noticed the spots getting bigger and darker, so I know they were because of age. I am 53 now, so the spots are even worse.

Where do you think your dark spots originate from?

When I was younger, I thought it was because of my Spanish heritage.  I was born and raised in the Philippines, so I was exposed to the sun ALL the time with no protection. I am a Filipino but my father is half Spanish. My skin is much lighter than a typical Filipino and even compared to my siblings.

Did the dark spots affect your self-esteem at all?

No, not really.  I haven’t really focused on my looks especially my complexion.  This is probably because of my background and the culture I came from.

When did you start exploring options to treat the dark spots?

When I started working for AOB Med Spa. I actually did not have any plans on treating my skin, nor have I spent any significant amount of time maintaining my complexion. But now that I started learning how to care for my skin, it’s actually exciting – it’s eye opening as to how much I can improve my complexion.

When did you start getting treatment?

I went to get my very first facial and skin assessment in January.

Tell us about what kind of treatments you’re receiving.

I am doing the IPL to try to remove my dark spots and fine lines on my face.  I’ve had two treatments since January and a few facials in between. On my second treatment, we’ve decided to remove upper lip hair, too.

Are the treatments painful at all?

For me, not so much. The pain a client will experience will depend on their pain tolerance. The aestheticians are very good about asking me about my comfort level throughout my treatment.

    AFTER TWO TREATMENTS

Have you noticed any change so far?

Yes! My face looks so much lighter and it’s so soft – I love the softness.  My friends and co-workers have made comments about how my skin looks. Even my son made a comment about how my skin looked different.

How much longer will you be receiving treatments?

The aestheticians I have worked with think that I should have a total of six series of treatments. They would like to do the treatments every 3 to 4 weeks.

How will receiving treatments for dark spots change the way you feel about your skin?

It is making more aware of how my face looks as I get older. It is also making me realize that I really need to take care of my skin and it does not take a lot of effort or time to do so.

Would you recommend this treatment for others with dark spots?

Yes, absolutely! I would recommend not only the dark spots (and wrinkles) treatments, but also using the AOB Med Spa products regularly to care for their skin – not to mention AOB Med Spa hair removal!
