  • 10 Tips for Glowing Skin This Winter

    Blog Image

When you think of winter in Denver, you think of skiing, snowboarding, sledding, skating, and a whole lot of snow! But as much fun as all those wintertime activities can be, there is one small problem: the havoc it can wreak on your skin!

The cold air can result in chapped, red skin on both your face and hands. And even if you choose to hibernate and stay inside, the heater is there to dry out your skin.

So what can you do to protect your skin? Take a look at these top 10 tips from our team below to help you achieve glowing skin this winter:

    1. Moisturize!

The moisturizing routine you used during the months probably isn’t going to cut it now that winter has arrived. Thicker moisturizers with peptides are a great choice, since they lock in your natural oils and help with anti-aging. If you have chapped skin, oil-based products are perfect for helping your skin to heal.  If you live in in a cold climate, we have a lot of great solutions to help with dry skin.

    1. Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

One of the best parts about living in Denver is that there are outdoor activities all year long. However, people often don't associate the winter with sunburns and will neglect to put on sunscreen. With all of that snow reflecting back on your face you can get some pretty bad burns. Make sure that you're maintaining your daily sunscreen regimen all winter long and protect your skin against unnecessary sun damage.

A warm scarf is the perfect, stylish solution for limiting exposure to the sun and other elements.

    1. Avoid long, hot showers (or extended stays in a bath)!

We totally get it! Nothing feels better after a long day on the slopes than a long, hot shower – or an even longer soak in the hot tub. However, when the water is really hot, the water breaks down your natural oils, leaving your skin dry and dehydrated.

    1. Regular facials.

Regular facials are excellent for treating overexposed, dry skin. We’re particularly fond of the Hydrafacial since it both exfoliates and hydrates your skin.

    1. Exfoliate… but not too much.

Exfoliating is a great solution for whisking away those dead skin cells. Just avoid over-doing it. Once or twice a week is typically ideal for maintaining the benefits of exfoliation without drying out your skin, although it does vary depending on the type of exfoliator.

The m.merge Bamboo Face Scrub is great for gently removing dead skin and hydrating with coconut and bamboo powder. The IS Clinical ® Tri-Active Exfoliant is also a great option. It has peptides and is designed to smooth, brighten and soften your skin.

    1. Use a humidifier.

Designed to increase moisture levels by emitting water into the air, humidifiers can have an enormous impact on dry skin. They can help with more than just that, though. The National Institutes of Health recommend humidifiers for relieving the symptoms of the common cold, flu, and sinus infections, as well as dry nasal passages, cracked lips and nosebleeds from the dry air.

    1. Hydrate from within.

Because you don't perspire as much during the winter months, many people are often bad about drinking water consistently. Make sure that you're hydrating from within by drinking plenty of water. Also, eat foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that help to keep your skin stay well lubricated and maintain that youthful glow.

    1. Get your beauty sleep.

This isn’t your typical skin care tip; however, sleep is the best way for your skin and body to repair and regenerate. When it gets dark out, your brain produces more melatonin to make you tired. With shorter days during the winter, you may notice that you’re getting tired earlier than you do during the summer. Take a cue from nature and get to bed sooner. Your skin and your body will thank you, trust us!

    1. Add a serum to the mix.

Give your moisturizer some help by applying a serum beforehand. Serums deliver more advanced, concentrated formulas that your skin loves because they have a smaller molecular structure and are able to better penetrate to the dermis. Serums pack in beneficial ingredients like antioxidants such as pomegranate extract and vitamin C , which protect against sun damage and fight the free radicals that cause skin aging. Some serums also contain vitamin E as well as retinol, which is great for anyone with oily or acne-prone skin.

If you need a serum with antioxidants, the SkinCeuticals® CE Ferulic® is a great choice. This antioxidant treatment contains 15% L-ascorbic acid, 1% alpha tocopherol, and 0.5% ferulic acid.

Because serums can penetrate more deeply than traditional moisturizers, they are able to deliver a high concentration of these active ingredients. This makes them a valuable tool for targeting specific skincare concerns, such as fine lines and wrinkles.

If you’re looking for a good serum to help combat the winter weather, we highly recommend the Hydrating B5 Gel, an oil-free hydrating gel designed to restore moisture, or the 15% Professional C Serum from Obagi, which is excellent for fighting free radical damage.

    1. Repair summer damage (or prep for the summer).

Since most of us spend less time out in the sun during the cold, winter months, it’s a great time to take advantage of the treatments that you don’t want during “bikini season.”

For example, the winter months are the best time of year to remove pigmentation from summer damage. It’s also a great time to start laser hair removal treatments, since it’s most effective when your skin is lighter. Since it also takes multiple treatments to achieve the desired results, it’s best to start your treatments in the winter in order to be ready to hit the beaches by summer.

For even more tips, the U.S. National Institutes of Health has more on keeping your skin healthy.

If you’re still searching for the perfect gift for the holidays, consider giving the gift of beautiful . Not sure what your friends and family need? You definitely can’t go wrong with a gift card! From facials to CoolSculpting to laser hair removal to skin care products, we have products and services to meet the needs of just about everybody on your list. And the best part about a gift card? You know your friends or family are getting exactly what they want!

  • Why I choose Bellafill® to treat the scars on my face

It seems silly that a small collection of scars could be the source of so much distress, but for me it was all I saw in photos and in the mirror for years.  When I was a child, I had the chicken pox and like most kids, I couldn’t resist the urge to pick at my skin.  Unfortunately, I had no idea that would leave me with scars on my face, the most visible part of my body.

A little over a year ago, I started to get MicroNeedling treatments to help reduce the appearance of scarring.  Although I did see some improvement in my skin, my scars were deep and I wanted to do something more.

I started researching other options and learned about Bellafill®.  Now, to preface, I am an all-natural kind of girl. I wear minimal makeup and when I am not working I am hiking, skiing, or running.  While I do care about my appearance, I have never considered receiving any kind of injectable treatment in the past, in part because of the negative stigma that surrounds the whole industry. I didn’t want to look like a Kardashian or look overdone.

Bellafill® seemed different from other fillers though.  For one, Bellafill® helps to replace lost collagen by working with your body’s natural process.  This comforted me A LOT as I didn’t want to look or feel fake in the process of getting rid of my scars.  Essentially, Bellafill® is made up of collagen and PMMA microspheres. The collagen gel provides immediate volume and lift while the PMMA microspheres bind with existing collagen to form a strong base for structural support.  In simple terms, Bellafill® is like a fertilizer that promotes collagen growth and the overall health of your skin as opposed to a filler which is temporary and fills empty pockets space.

Rather than being a temporary filler, Bellafill® has been proven effective with results lasting through 5 years, with many patients saying that the effects are permanent. The price per syringe is higher than most other fillers, but given the lasting results it is a much cheaper option for clients looking to treat acne scars or volume loss.

On Saturday, I came to AOB Med Spa and I got my treatment.  Although I had done my own research, my provider went over the treatment with me, explaining what was going to happen and how I would feel. My provider also answered any remaining questions that I had. Numbing cream was applied to my face to reduce any potential pain or discomfort and I was given stress balls to squeeze during my treatment.  Overall I didn’t experience much pain, just a small pinch and a bit of a weird tingle.

The treatment was quick and easy, and I was able to return to normal activities immediately after treatment.  When I got home, I immediately could tell the difference in the depth of my scars. They look shallow and are barely visible except under close inspection.  What is more amazing is that over time, my results will get better as the PMMA microspheres remain in place and create a base that provides critical structural support for my skin.

I can’t tell you how happy I am with my results and it’s been less than 48 hours!  I highly recommend coming in for a free consultation to learn more about Bellafill®! Give us a call at 303.731.2149 today to learn more!

  • Top 5 Causes of Adult Acne and How Can you Treat It

Acne is bad enough when you’re a teenager, but when you’re an adult, it can be just plain embarrassing. If this is you, you aren’t alone! According to, adult acne affects 25% of adult men and 50% of adult women at some point in their lives. And today, dermatologists are seeing more adult acne patients than ever before.

So what are the causes of breakouts in adults?

You would think that by the time you’re an adult, your hormones will have stabilized to the point that they would no longer cause acne. Think again! Fluctuation in hormones, like the one women experience before their menstrual cycle begins, is the main cause of adult acne. For men, it’s a fluctuation in male hormones, including testosterone, that typically cause acne. Men naturally secrete more of these male hormones. In addition, testosterone levels typically increase as a result of exercise, which leads to a greater likelihood men will develop adult acne.

This is likely why dermatologists are seeing more adult acne cases than in the past. Many women work full time while simultaneously trying to juggle raising kids and taking care of their families. They’re taking on way more than previous generations! In order to combat stress, the body makes more of the hormone cortisol. Unfortunately, during this process, a bit of testosterone leaks out with it, causing more oil to be produced and, inevitably, more breakouts.

    Too Much Sugar

Your sweet tooth could be impacting more than your waistline! Evidence shows that when sugar raises your insulin level, it boosts the male hormones that produce more breakouts. Do yourself a favor and stick to low-glycemic foods that cause a less significant insulin spike.

Using the Wrong Products or Using Them Too Frequently

Over-exfoliating or over-cleansing your skin can lead to breakouts. The same can be said of products that make skin oilier. The bottom line is that it’s important to know your skin and use the right products for the best results.

This is something most of us don’t think about affecting our skin. However, when you get home at the end of the day, wipe your face with a toner pad or face wipe and see what it looks like.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, approximately 83 million tons of pollution were emitted into the air in 2012. And that pollution isn’t just staying on the surface of your skin and coming off when you wash your face at night. The tiny particles are penetrating into deeper layers of the epidermis, causing inflammation and dehydration as well as a loss of elasticity and firmness.

And all this pore-clogging pollution definitely can lead to an increase in adults acne. Make sure you’re exfoliating regularly and helping your skin to repair itself by using a serum with antioxidants.

How can you treat adult acne?

Believe it or not, there are a lot of options out there for treating the tell-tale signs of acne. (There are even options for treating the scarring that can result from acne!) And it definitely isn’t necessary to rely on harsh products that rob your skin of moisture and leave your face dry and peeling for weeks.

Here are a few acne treatments we recommend to our own clients.

    Treating Active Breakouts

Most acne products on the market are designed to be applied directly to the surface of your skin. However, one of our favorite treatments for active breakouts is Skin Accumax, a supplement designed to clear up moderate acne from the inside out.

Skin Accumax contains a combination of vitamins and plant nutrients designed to address the underlying factors that cause acne. Also, while most products are designed specifically for the face, Skin Accumax can treat breakouts all over the body.

Skin Accumax is also appropriate for anyone over the age of 16, which makes it a great acne treatment for teenagers. Please do note, however, that women who are breastfeeding, pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take this product .

The HydraFacial is another option, especially for someone with sensitive skin who wouldn’t be a good candidate for a chemical peel or micro needling. This non-invasive resurfacing treatment removes dead skin cells, leaving you with beautiful, fresh new skin! (It’s also a great solution for treating post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which we discuss in detail below.)

    AOB Acne Buster Facial

This facial is great for active breakouts as well as post inflammatory pigmentation. It’s specifically designed to treat your acne-prone, oily skin while improving hydration.

    Treating Acne Scars

Many adults who suffered from bad acne in their youth have scarring as a result. Luckily, there are treatments available for those individuals as well!

Bellafill is a phenomenal solution if you suffer from unsightly acne scarring. It is an injectable that is designed to add volume back into the pockets where you have scarring. What makes this product so unique, though, is that unlike most injectables, it’s been FDA-approved to last up to five years. (Some even claim that their results have been permanent!) Regardless, it’s a long-lasting solution to minimize the appearance of acne scars.

    Treating Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, often referred to as PIH, is the medical term that refers to the dark pink or brown spots on your skin where the acne lesions have healed. Some people mistake this discoloration as scarring. PIH develops when a wound like a pimple causes your skin to become inflamed. As it heals, your skin produces too much melanin, the protein that gives your skin its color and the excess melanin causes discoloration that remains after the pimple has gone away.

So how can you treat PIH?

We have a LOT of options for treating PIH. For a full list of treatments for hyperpigmentation, visit our website. Below are a few that we commonly recommend for PIH.

    Micro Needling

Microneedling is a minimally-invasive procedure that involves using a device with fine needles to create microscopic wounds in the skin. This triggers the body to create new collagen and elastin to fill the wounds. While the idea of wounding your skin to improve its appearance may seem counterproductive, the procedure will improve both your skin texture and tone, reducing the appearance of PIH.

    Chemical peels

A chemical peel is a solution applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and peel off. The new skin is smoother and has a more even skin tone, making it a great option for treating PIH. We have a few options available for patients interested in chemical peels for treating acne.

    Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing

This non-invasive laser treatment is a fantastic solution for reducing the appearance of acne scarring as well as skin discoloration from PIH.

    Final Thoughts

As you can see, there are a lot of different options for treating acne and the scarring or PIH that has resulted from breakouts. You absolutely do not have to accept your adult acne. If you are an adult (or even a teenager) who suffers from acne and you’re in the Denver area, schedule an appointment with one of our specialists to discuss your best acne treatment options.

  • A Runners Guide to Skincare

I just ran my first marathon over the weekend and it got me thinking about skincare for athletes.  As athletes, we do so much to prepare physically and mentally for a race but are we thinking about our skin in the same way? A non-elite runner takes anywhere from 4-6 hours to complete a race and that right there is a LOT of sun exposure. Below are a few tips to help you protect your skin while running this summer. Whether you are running a marathon or going for a 30 minute jog take precaution and protect your skin!

    blog photo

    1. Know your route

Understand that there are many factors that will put you at risk for dangerous sun exposure.  Consider elevation, time of day, and amount of shade on your route. If you are doing a training run, take these factors into consideration when planning where and when to run.  If you are running a race, research these factors ahead of the race so you can come prepared.

    2. Hydration

We need to hydrate every day for both physical health and skincare health.  Prior to running a race it is essential to fill your body with hydrating fluids to prepare for the course ahead.

    2. Anti-Oxidant

On the day of your run or day of the race, apply an anti-oxidant serum in the morning before your race. This will help to protect you against free-radicals.  I personally use SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF.

    3. Sunscreen

This is essential in protecting your face and the rest of your body.  Use a physical blocker with zinc to increase protection against UVA and UVB rays. I ran with the Obagi Sun Shield on my face and I was very pleased that when I sweat it didn't run into my eyes. While no sunscreen is truly water proof, try a sunscreen like Elta MD UV Aero Broad Spectrum SPF 45 fothat is water resistant and can protect you despite sweat. This is great for use on the body.

    4. Wear a hat

This will help to minimize the exposed skin to the suns harmful rays and can protect you on some longer runs.

    4. Reapply Sunscreen

If you are running a race and cannot control things like time of day and shaded route, keep in mind there are opportunities to reapply sunscreen. All of the aid stations along your race route will have sunscreen available for runners.  If you are doing a longer race and will be exposed for more than two hours its a good idea to plan to stop at an aid station to re-apply. Check the race route the night before and plan out your stops accordingly.

Or, if you are running in Colorado, stop by one of our AOB locations and we would be happy to give you a few sample sized packets you can bring along and reapply throughout the course.

    5. Seek Shade

Post race, find some shade to stretch and re-hydrate. It is essential for you cool down and get some fluids back in your body.

    6. Cleanse & Moisturize your face

After a run it is important to cleanse your face removing any dust or dirt you may have picked up on the run so that you don't clog your pores.  I suggest using a gentle cleanser such as m.pulse Oxygenated Cleanser. After washing your face apply a moisturizer to hydrate your skin.

    7. Treat yourself to a HydraFacial MD®

A HydraFacial MD® is perfect for an athlete that has just finished a long race.  It will remove any skin impurities, unclog pores and hydrate your skin.  A single treatment will leave your skin nourished and restored after a run, hydrating thoroughly and giving you a radiant glow!

  • Luscious Lips. Not without sunscreen

I've never thought about my lips the way I think about my skin when it comes to protection.  I learned my lesson this weekend. Like most Coloradans, I enjoying being outdoors as much as possible and last weekend was no exception.  A few friends and I packed our bags and headed for the mountains with the intent on a Mt. Sherman summit on Sunday morning.

Being a part of the skincare industry, I was careful to not forget the essentials: sunscreen, a hat, long sleeves, and sun glasses. Knowing I'd be higher in altitude and closer to the suns powerful rays, protection was paramount. Not to mention, the snow still on the mountain would reflect the sun and increase the risk of sun damage even more.

    blog photo

The day started off great.  With sunscreen applied, we started our ascent, marveling at how lucky we were to have such beautiful weather. Surrounded by snow capped peaks in every direction, I was in awe of my first winter 14er. Around 13,000ft, however,  I started experiencing a few signs of altitude sickness.  Rather than make the final ascent, I oped for rest and re-hydration. While I waited for my friends to summit and return, I built and subsequently huddled behind a rock wall protecting myself from the wind.  What I didn't think about, however, was the direct and very intense sun exposure that I was getting.

After arriving back at the car, I looked in the mirror and was horrified to discover how burnt the lower part of my face was despite wearing sunscreen all day.  What was the most disturbing was the sunburn I had gotten on my lips.  Red, irritated, and blistery from prolonged exposure to sun at high altitude.

I am NEVER forgetting my Elta MD UV Lip Balm ever again.

3 things you should always remember about SPF when hiking:

    1. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied early and often. Zinc based sunscreens act as a physical block and can last up to 2 hours.

    2. Sometimes sunscreen isn't enough, creating a physical barrier between you and the sun can be the most effective way to protect your skin.

    3. Don't forget the LIPS! Applying SPF to the lips is JUST as important as the skin.  It is a place we often forget and doing so can be very harmful (and painful might I add).

  • 10 things you need to know about protecting your skin this month

Did you know that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month? Here is what you need to know going into the summer about skin cancer and ways you can minimize the risks of sun exposure.

    1. Melanoma or skin cancer is the most common form of cancer found in the United States.

    2. It only takes as little as 15 minutes of exposure to damage your skin.

    3. You need to protect your skin even on cloudy and overcast days because UV rays are are still able to penetrate through the clouds and damage your skin. Studies show that only 20% of UV rays get blocked by clouds, letting 80% through.

    4. Any change in the color of your skin is an indication of UV ray damage.

    5. In order to best protect yourself from sun damage sunscreen should be reapplied at least every two hours.

    6. You can get a sun burn while driving your car.  You may think you are safe with a rolled up window, but UV rays will come straight through the glass and cause sun damage on your skin.

    7. There is no such thing as water proof sunscreen - only water resistant.  If you are swimming this summer, reapplying your sunscreen needs to happen frequently as no sunscreen is truly water proof.

    8. In a 2013 study, only 13% of high school girls and 7% of high school boys reported using sunscreen on a regular basis when exposed to sun.  Compare this to 73% of adult women and 67% of adult men.

    9. Individuals with light or fair skin burn more easily and need to take extra precautions against the suns harmful rays.

    10. To best protect yourself from sun damage, you should take as many precautions as possible including: wearing sunscreen, avoiding tanning beds, wearing protective clothing and hats, checking the UV index prior to sun exposure, and seeking shade when outdoors.

  • Meet Emily, AOB Client and Skin Cancer Survivor

That’s right. Sunscreen.  As we move into the warmer months, wearing sunscreen remains as important as ever in our daily skincare routine.  Living at high altitude means that we are so much closer to the sun and need to apply sunscreen every day.uvclearairless_hr

In the world of skincare we talk so often about protecting our skin and how to avoid things like premature aging and permanent skin damage.  What we don’t always talk about is the big C word. We all know it’s out there. Many of us know someone who has been diagnosed. We all think, “It could never happen to me”.

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States.  The rate of diagnosis in Colorado is 15% higher than that of the national average, putting all of us who live here at a higher risk than our friends across the country.  It may be winter, but that does not mean that we should stop protecting our skin, especially if you are like me and enjoy being outside all summer.

Meet Emily, one of our All Over Beautiful clients.  Emily is a beautiful, smart, fair skinned woman in her early 20’s.  As a recent graduate from Johnson and Wales University in Denver, Emily spends her time as a nanny and personal chef for a local family. Emily always wore sunscreen, never tanned – yet today she is a survivor.

It was Emily’s dad who first noticed a mole that had started to look unnatural.  He asked her to get it checked out at the doctor and, after a few tests, they found out it was indeed cancerous.

Through it all, she couldn’t stop asking, “Why did I get cancer?  Why me? Why am I going through this?”

While the experience was challenging, Emily said that going through it made her more aware of what is going on with her skin and inspired her to take better care of her skin as a result.  “It was a wake up call,” she explained, “I never did anything wrong to my skin or exposed it purposefully, but I wasn’t helping it either.”

aobmedspaPost cancer, Emily’s daily skincare routine consists of a gentle exfoliation followed by m.pulse m.mortal hyaluronic acid serum and two layers of day cream to keep her face moisturized.  She then applies sunscreen before putting on makeup for the day.

Once a month, Emily visits AOB to see Seabron, Medical Aesthetician, for a facial, which really helps with her dry skin and she laughs as she tells me that it’s really nice to relax for an hour given her busy schedule with the kids!

Emily describes her experience with AOB as relaxing and professional.  She explained that, before seeing Seabron, she had been seeing another aesthetician and was nervous to switch providers. Seabron made her feel really comfortable by checking in with her and walking her through the treatments.

When I asked Emily about what All Over Beautiful means to her, she said, “Inner beauty and inner happiness coming out makes you look and feel the most beautiful!” Throughout our meeting, I could see Emily’s inner beauty and happiness shine through in our conversation.  She truly is All Over Beautiful!
