  • Why I choose Bellafill® to treat the scars on my face

It seems silly that a small collection of scars could be the source of so much distress, but for me it was all I saw in photos and in the mirror for years.  When I was a child, I had the chicken pox and like most kids, I couldn’t resist the urge to pick at my skin.  Unfortunately, I had no idea that would leave me with scars on my face, the most visible part of my body.

A little over a year ago, I started to get MicroNeedling treatments to help reduce the appearance of scarring.  Although I did see some improvement in my skin, my scars were deep and I wanted to do something more.

I started researching other options and learned about Bellafill®.  Now, to preface, I am an all-natural kind of girl. I wear minimal makeup and when I am not working I am hiking, skiing, or running.  While I do care about my appearance, I have never considered receiving any kind of injectable treatment in the past, in part because of the negative stigma that surrounds the whole industry. I didn’t want to look like a Kardashian or look overdone.

Bellafill® seemed different from other fillers though.  For one, Bellafill® helps to replace lost collagen by working with your body’s natural process.  This comforted me A LOT as I didn’t want to look or feel fake in the process of getting rid of my scars.  Essentially, Bellafill® is made up of collagen and PMMA microspheres. The collagen gel provides immediate volume and lift while the PMMA microspheres bind with existing collagen to form a strong base for structural support.  In simple terms, Bellafill® is like a fertilizer that promotes collagen growth and the overall health of your skin as opposed to a filler which is temporary and fills empty pockets space.

Rather than being a temporary filler, Bellafill® has been proven effective with results lasting through 5 years, with many patients saying that the effects are permanent. The price per syringe is higher than most other fillers, but given the lasting results it is a much cheaper option for clients looking to treat acne scars or volume loss.

On Saturday, I came to AOB Med Spa and I got my treatment.  Although I had done my own research, my provider went over the treatment with me, explaining what was going to happen and how I would feel. My provider also answered any remaining questions that I had. Numbing cream was applied to my face to reduce any potential pain or discomfort and I was given stress balls to squeeze during my treatment.  Overall I didn’t experience much pain, just a small pinch and a bit of a weird tingle.

The treatment was quick and easy, and I was able to return to normal activities immediately after treatment.  When I got home, I immediately could tell the difference in the depth of my scars. They look shallow and are barely visible except under close inspection.  What is more amazing is that over time, my results will get better as the PMMA microspheres remain in place and create a base that provides critical structural support for my skin.

I can’t tell you how happy I am with my results and it’s been less than 48 hours!  I highly recommend coming in for a free consultation to learn more about Bellafill®! Give us a call at 303.731.2149 today to learn more!

  • 10 things you need to know about protecting your skin this month

Did you know that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month? Here is what you need to know going into the summer about skin cancer and ways you can minimize the risks of sun exposure.

    1. Melanoma or skin cancer is the most common form of cancer found in the United States.

    2. It only takes as little as 15 minutes of exposure to damage your skin.

    3. You need to protect your skin even on cloudy and overcast days because UV rays are are still able to penetrate through the clouds and damage your skin. Studies show that only 20% of UV rays get blocked by clouds, letting 80% through.

    4. Any change in the color of your skin is an indication of UV ray damage.

    5. In order to best protect yourself from sun damage sunscreen should be reapplied at least every two hours.

    6. You can get a sun burn while driving your car.  You may think you are safe with a rolled up window, but UV rays will come straight through the glass and cause sun damage on your skin.

    7. There is no such thing as water proof sunscreen - only water resistant.  If you are swimming this summer, reapplying your sunscreen needs to happen frequently as no sunscreen is truly water proof.

    8. In a 2013 study, only 13% of high school girls and 7% of high school boys reported using sunscreen on a regular basis when exposed to sun.  Compare this to 73% of adult women and 67% of adult men.

    9. Individuals with light or fair skin burn more easily and need to take extra precautions against the suns harmful rays.

    10. To best protect yourself from sun damage, you should take as many precautions as possible including: wearing sunscreen, avoiding tanning beds, wearing protective clothing and hats, checking the UV index prior to sun exposure, and seeking shade when outdoors.

  • 4 Reasons to Wear Sunscreen Every Day

    Elevation

With Denver's elevation at 5,280 ft we are a LOT closer to the sun than our friends at sea level.  This means the suns rays are much stronger and more powerful in Denver.  Applying sunscreen in the morning and throughout the day is vital to protecting our skin!

    Avoid Awkward Tan Lines

Are you an active Coloradan?  Hiking, biking, and trail running are all fun spring and summer activities but the tan lines from our athletic clothes are not.  When you are on the mountain, you are EVEN CLOSER to the sun than when you are in the city.  Lather on some sunscreen so you can trail run or mountain bike without worrying about how your tan lines will look at your sisters wedding.

    iSClinical-Extreme-Protect-SPF30_5

    Anti Aging

We say it again and again but wearing sunscreen helps reduce the risk of premature aging of the skin.  Weather it is mid-April, December, or July taking care of your skin year around is important to minimize your aging and keep you looking young!

    Avoid Skin Cancer

We all think it won't happen to us but skin cancer is a reality for many people.  Even though the sun is most harmful to us during the peak hours or 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. any exposure to sunlight during the day can be harmful to our skin and can contribute to skin cancer later in life. This same principle holds true for sun exposure during off peak months like November - April.  Even on a cloudy day, you can still be exposed to harmful rays.

    Better Sunscreen Options Available!

At AOB Med Spa, we pride ourselves in offering great sun protection solutions. We carry several zinc based formulas from brands like Elta MD, SkinCeuticals, Obagi and IS Clinical.  Zinc and titanium dioxide act as a physical block against harmful UVA and UVB rays.

  • 5 Truths You Should Know Before Botox®

While Botox® has become a household name since it received FDA approval as a cosmetic in 2002, there are still a lot of misconceptions and misinformation out there regarding this drug. The good news, however, is that there IS a lot of great, useful information out there…you just have to know where to look. We have compiled a list of the top five things you should know BEFORE you receive any Botox® injections.

Everyone performs Botox® injections. Be careful who you trust with your face.

Have you ever received Groupon deals for Botox®? Or seen signs on the side of the street advertising a low per-unit cost for injections? Yeah…so have we. EVERYONE is performing Botox® injections these days, capitalizing on the fact that Botox® has become a recognized name and a common treatment. However, just because it’s a relatively simple procedure for experienced physicians doesn’t mean that everyone doling out injections is good…or even knows what they’re doing.

SarahYou don't get great results with Botox® just because it’s a great product, although it most certainly is that. You achieve great results because the person performing the injections is great at getting the natural results you want. If your injections are too low or too deep, they can actually do more harm than good…and that botched Botox® treatment will be on display all across your face. Not good!

Here at AOB Med Spa, Sarah Kurts PA-C is the Director of Cosmetic Injectables. She has been in the dermatology industry for over 14 years and acquired her Physician Assistant degree from the University of CO Health Sciences Center. Sarah has advanced training in cosmetic injectables and expertise in the cannula technique for fillers. She was named Colorado Community Newspaper’s 2012 Best of the Best for Cosmetic Surgery/Medical Aesthetics in Lone Tree.

Whoever you choose for your injections, make sure you do your research and ensure that they have experience necessary to get you the results you want!

    Results take time.

Many people believe that their frown lines will miraculously disappear the moment they get Botox®. However, this just isn’t the case. You should start to notice the results in the first 72 hours; however, it may take up to seven days to achieve the full results. You'll need to be patient as you wait for the wrinkles to fade.

    Keep track of your units.

If you know you’ll be needing regular injections (and you will if you want to maintain your results, since the injections wear off over time), keep track of how many units you’re using each visit. While your doctor should have this information, it’s good to know if you choose to switch physicians at some point.

    Consider preventative Botox®.

Don’t get me wrong, there is a time when you are too young for Botox®, such as in your teens. That said, starting Botox® before you develop deep frown lines can help prevent the likelihood that you’ll need extra treatments down the road, such as dermal fillers.

    It’s a fast, painless procedure.

If you’re squeamish about needles, the idea of receiving an injection in your face can be particularly daunting. However, the needle is so small that you should only feel a slight prick. The injections don’t even require any kind of numbing medicine, which means that not only are they virtually pain free, but you’ll also be in and out of the office in no time and ready to go about the rest of your day!

If you’re looking for Botox® in Denver, we are happy to answer all of your questions and come up with the best treatment plan to help you achieve your desired results. Contact us today at 303-305-4343 or info@aobmedspa.com.

  • Superfood Friday: Green Coffee Bean Extract, the Best Kept Fat Burning Secret?

For many of us in Denver and Dallas, our daily routine starts with waking up each morning to a fresh cup of coffee (or two). It gives us that boost of caffeine we need to get through the day, but have you ever looked into the health benefits of the actual coffee bean?

For a few years now, multiple studies have been conducted on the little bean that wakes us up every morning. But there's a catch – the coffee bean isn't beneficial if it's roasted. It's the unroasted bean that contains the benefits everyone's raving about - benefits we can tap into with green coffee bean extract.

Coffee beans contain a chemical called chlorogenic acid. When beans are roasted, this chemical is minimized, but that chemical could just be the fat-burning miracle you've been looking for. Un-roasted beans are soaked, then concentrated to create that green coffee bean extract.

A couple of years ago, The Dr. Oz Show did a two-week experiment with the green coffee bean extract. With 100 audience members, 50 were placed in the control group with a placebo pill, and the other 50 got the actual extract.

All 100 participants were women, ages 35-49. These women each had a BMI of 25-45, with no diabetes or history of heart attack or stroke, and none were pregnant.

The 50 women who took the placebo pill lost a total of 24 pounds together, whereas the 50 women who took the green coffee bean extract pill lost a total of 100 pounds together, averaging two pounds per person. In the end, Dr. Oz called green coffee bean extract a "miracle."

    Watch the video here:

If you're intrigued by this little pill that could possibly be the missing link between you and weight loss, there are a few tips to follow. First, the only pure green coffee bean extract that will work. Even if a pill container says "pure," it might not be accurate. The ingredients to look for are SVETOL and GCA (green coffee antioxidant). These two ingredients will mean that the form you're looking at is indeed pure.

Also, you want to make sure that there is at least 45% chlorogenic acid. Remember, chlorogenic acid is the chemical found in coffee beans that minimizes when the bean is roasted. You don't want to go below 45% because there won't be enough of that active chemical in the extract to help with weight loss.

The recommended dosage for green coffee bean extract is 400mg, 3 times per day, 30 minutes before meals. Before taking the extract, you should consult with your doctor to make sure this is the right step for your weight loss goal. But according to the Dr. Oz experiment and other studies going around, you could lose up to 2 pounds in two weeks.

Whether you drink coffee beans for that extra boost in the morning or you tap into the un-roasted benefits with the extract, the coffee bean in Denver and Dallas packs a lot of power in a small package!

  • Superfood Friday: 5 Surprising Health Benefits of Cherries

Cherries are one of the most popular summer fruits in Denver and Dallas. Maybe that's because they're so versatile. Whether you eat them straight out of the bag, make a pie with them, or you work them into a cocktail, cherries make a delicious treat.

But what you don't know about cherries may surprise you. This little drop of sweetness is a superfood containing antioxidants, nutrition and other ingredients that can help your skin, hair and overall health.

    Cherries: Five Surprising Health Benefits

    Skincare

Research has shown that tart cherry juice can help lighten the skin, making it especially beneficial for those with dark spots. Cherries also contain vitamins A, B, C and E, which can help with hair growth and hydration as well as blood circulation in the skin.

    Weight loss

Adding a cup of cherries to any diet - even an otherwise less than healthy one - can help decrease belly fat. Cherries can also lower blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. One cup of cherries is under 100 calories, but it contains 3 grams of fiber which can help with digestion and will make you feel full longer.

    Post-workout Relief

After an intense workout, some say that you're supposed to have a glass of milk while others recommend refreshing with just a glass of room temperature water. But did you know that cherries can help with that post-workout soreness? By drinking one cup of tart cherry juice or eating a cup and a half of tart cherries, you can relieve that inflammation in your muscles!

    Sleep

No matter how early we wake up, how much time we put in at the gym, and how much time we spend running around the house, sometimes we all have problems with sleep. Whether we're getting too much or not enough, it's often hard to actually fall asleep. Cherry juice can help with this. It contains melatonin - a hormone that can make you feel sleepy. Research shows that two tablespoons of tart cherry juice can be just as effective as a melatonin supplement, so a half cup of juice should do the trick.

Protect against cancer and other diseases

Cherries may be a small fruit, but like berries, they pack a ton of antioxidants which can help protect your body against free radical damage. Cherries contain queritrin, ellagic acid and perillyl alcohol, which are shown to reduce the risk and even prevent cancer in Denver and Dallas.

Drunken Cherry Recipecourtesy of Jennifer Farley of Savory Simple

    Ingredients

    • 1 lb cherries, pitted
    • 1/2 c + 2 Tbsp Grand Marnier, divided
    • 1/3 c + 2 Tbsp granulated sugar, divided
    • 1 c heavy cream
    • 1 c half and half
    • 1/2 Tbsp pure vanilla extract
    • 6 Safest Choice™ pasteurized egg yolk(s)

    Preparation

    1. Place the cherries in a medium-sized bowl. Add 1/2 cup Grand Marnier and 2 tablespoons sugar. Stir well, cover, and refrigerate for a minimum of 30 minutes. Stir periodically so the liquid coats the cherries.
    2. Pour the cherries and all liquid from the bowl into a large skillet over medium-low heat. Stirring frequently, cook the cherries down until they're very soft and the liquid has reduced and thickened substantially, approximately 15 minutes. Allow the cherries to cool briefly and then puree in a blender until smooth. For some texture in the ice cream, don't puree the cherries completely.
    3. Heat the heavy cream, half and half, and vanilla in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. In a small bowl, vigorously whisk together the egg yolks and 1/3 cup sugar. When the cream begins to simmer, turn the heat to low and ladle about half of it into the egg mixture while whisking. Pour the contents of the bowl back into the saucepan, using a spatula to get everything out of the bowl. Over low heat, stir the custard with a heatproof spatula (or wooden spoon) until it thickens up a bit and coats the back of spatula.
    4. Allow the ice cream base to cool for several minutes, stirring periodically to prevent a skin from forming. Take a small taste and if you feel that it needs more Grand Marnier flavor, stir in 1-2 more tablespoons of the liquor. Pour the base into a bowl and cover with plastic wrap, pushing the plastic directly against the liquid. Chill for a minimum of 6 hours, preferably overnight.
    5. Prepare ice cream in an ice cream maker according to manufacturer's instructions.

  • Superfood Friday: How Eating Dark Chocolate Can Improve Your Health

Women and their chocolate: It's a relationship that many of us have tried to end, but it seems that there's always a point where we give in and need a chocolate fix. But instead of feeling bad about yourself after indulging, there are health benefits you can cash in on from eating some of that creamy, chocolatey goodness.

When it comes to figuring out these health benefits, you have to first start with the variety of chocolate you're eating. There are pretty much no benefits coming from a Hershey's milk chocolate bar, so we have to look in the other direction.

Dark chocolate might have an acquired taste, especially the kind that can be good for your overall health and skin. If you're going to hunt for dark chocolate that you can count in benefits instead of a few extra pounds, the cacao percentage is important. Try finding a dark chocolate that's 70% cacao and above. Once you hit that number, you can feel great about what you're eating. And here's why.

    1. Reduces stress. After a long day at work or after a break-up, you can feel good about yourself while indulging in a little dark chocolate. Studies show that it can actually reduce stress and raise metabolism levels. So take that, stress.

    2. Lowers blood pressure. Who would have thought that candy can actually lower blood pressure? When eaten a small amount of high cacao-content dark chocolate, those arteries can stretch and open up, while lowering your bloog pressure and making your heart healthy and happy.

    3. Antioxidants. Dark chocolate is full of antioxidants, which can improve your health, mood and even prevent you from unwanted effects of aging.

    4. Contains vitamins and minerals. Potassium, copper, magnesium and iron are all found in dark chocolate. Help keep up your heart health with the copper and potassium, and up your energy levels with the iron.

    5. Positive skin benefits. Dark chocolate contains flavonols, which can delay the aging process in your skin while also protecting your skin against the sun. It also contains free radicals, which can increase the blood flow in your body leaving you with a healthy glow.
