  • Botox Versus Dysport: Which Should I Choose?

Even if you’ve never received a Botox injection in your life, you’re probably familiar with the drug. Popular for reducing the appearance of wrinkles, it has also been approved by the FDA for use in a variety of other ways, including treating migraine headaches and severe underarm sweating. In fact, by 1997, Botox use spiked so high the country’s supply temporarily ran out!

However, Botox isn’t the only treatment available for reducing the appearance of frown lines. There is also a lesser-known product, Dysport, that is gaining in popularity. The question is, which one is better? And what REALLY is the difference between the two?

    A Tale of Two Injectables

Even though you may never have heard of Dysport, the reality is that BOTH Dysport and Botox are made from botulinum toxin A, the protein that works by relaxing targeted muscles. Before being used to relax facial muscles, it was actually used to provide patients with temporary relief from spasms in the face, neck, shoulders, and even vocal cords.

Comparing Botox to Dysport is very much the same thing as comparing apples to apples. While some people like Honeycrisp the best, others prefer Gala. In the end, though, both are still just apples.

Just because you are less familiar with Dysport doesn’t make it an inferior product. Truth be told, both Botox and Dysport have been in use for years. While Dysport wasn’t introduced to the U.S. market until 2009, it has been used as an anti-aging treatment in Europe for years.

Both Dysport and Botox have high safety profiles and both have shown similar side effects. In fact, the results from the two different injectables are so similar that in most double-blind clinical studies both the patient and doctor were unable to tell the results apart.

How is Dysport different than Botox?

There are actually very few differences, but the main one is that Dysport is a smaller-sized molecule so its unit measurement is different than Botox. You may also find that it costs less than Botox, but that will actually vary from person to person since the amount the doctor uses will be dependent on the total amount needed to accomplish your goals.

Some find that the onset time for Dysport is faster than Botox, although only by a day or two, which for most is insignificant. Some patients also report that Dysport lasts slightly longer, although, again, not by any significant amount. Click here to read what more doctors are saying on the subject of Botox versus Dysport.

Want great results? Focus on finding a great doctor over a great product!

At the end of the day, what is most important is not which product you’re having injected, but WHO is performing the injection. Bad results from Botox and Dysport are not the fault of the products, but are the result of inexperience or negligence on behalf of the person performing the injection.

It’s worth the time and effort to perform your due diligence and find a med spa or doctor with great reviews and proven results. Cutting corners to save a few dollars is not worth it…not when any bad results will be on display across your face! And I you’re looking for Dysport or Botox in Denver, we are happy to help you make sure you get the results you want. Contact us today at 303-305-4343 or

  • 5 Truths You Should Know Before Botox®

While Botox® has become a household name since it received FDA approval as a cosmetic in 2002, there are still a lot of misconceptions and misinformation out there regarding this drug. The good news, however, is that there IS a lot of great, useful information out there…you just have to know where to look. We have compiled a list of the top five things you should know BEFORE you receive any Botox® injections.

Everyone performs Botox® injections. Be careful who you trust with your face.

Have you ever received Groupon deals for Botox®? Or seen signs on the side of the street advertising a low per-unit cost for injections? Yeah…so have we. EVERYONE is performing Botox® injections these days, capitalizing on the fact that Botox® has become a recognized name and a common treatment. However, just because it’s a relatively simple procedure for experienced physicians doesn’t mean that everyone doling out injections is good…or even knows what they’re doing.

SarahYou don't get great results with Botox® just because it’s a great product, although it most certainly is that. You achieve great results because the person performing the injections is great at getting the natural results you want. If your injections are too low or too deep, they can actually do more harm than good…and that botched Botox® treatment will be on display all across your face. Not good!

Here at AOB Med Spa, Sarah Kurts PA-C is the Director of Cosmetic Injectables. She has been in the dermatology industry for over 14 years and acquired her Physician Assistant degree from the University of CO Health Sciences Center. Sarah has advanced training in cosmetic injectables and expertise in the cannula technique for fillers. She was named Colorado Community Newspaper’s 2012 Best of the Best for Cosmetic Surgery/Medical Aesthetics in Lone Tree.

Whoever you choose for your injections, make sure you do your research and ensure that they have experience necessary to get you the results you want!

    Results take time.

Many people believe that their frown lines will miraculously disappear the moment they get Botox®. However, this just isn’t the case. You should start to notice the results in the first 72 hours; however, it may take up to seven days to achieve the full results. You'll need to be patient as you wait for the wrinkles to fade.

    Keep track of your units.

If you know you’ll be needing regular injections (and you will if you want to maintain your results, since the injections wear off over time), keep track of how many units you’re using each visit. While your doctor should have this information, it’s good to know if you choose to switch physicians at some point.

    Consider preventative Botox®.

Don’t get me wrong, there is a time when you are too young for Botox®, such as in your teens. That said, starting Botox® before you develop deep frown lines can help prevent the likelihood that you’ll need extra treatments down the road, such as dermal fillers.

    It’s a fast, painless procedure.

If you’re squeamish about needles, the idea of receiving an injection in your face can be particularly daunting. However, the needle is so small that you should only feel a slight prick. The injections don’t even require any kind of numbing medicine, which means that not only are they virtually pain free, but you’ll also be in and out of the office in no time and ready to go about the rest of your day!

If you’re looking for Botox® in Denver, we are happy to answer all of your questions and come up with the best treatment plan to help you achieve your desired results. Contact us today at 303-305-4343 or

  • 5 Most Common Botox Myths

Even though Botox® has become, essentially, a household name, there is still a lot of misinformation floating around regarding this simple treatment. Now, the BEST way to put any myths to rest is to meet with a physician yourself. If you’re interested in Botox® in Denver, we are happy to discuss any questions you might have. But, before you schedule that appointment, here are some of the top myths about Botox®.

Myth: Botox® should be performed when wrinkles become visible.

While this does seem logical, the truth is that getting Botox® before lines appear can help you get ahead of the game. While you may balk at the idea of “preventative Botox®,” the reality is that getting injections in your 20s or 30s can ultimately prevent you from requiring more invasive procedures later. In other words, if you choose to wait until you NEED Botox® to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, you may find that you have to give your wrinkles a little more TLC (like getting both Botox® AND fillers, or possibly laser treatments).

Myth: Wrinkles will get worse if you stop getting Botox® injections.

This is absolutely NOT true and is definitely not something you should be concerned about. If you stop getting Botox® injections, your wrinkles will simply return how they were before. Of course the results aren’t permanent, so if you want to keep treating your wrinkles with Botox® you’ll have to go back at regular intervals for injections. Your physician will be able to make a recommendation about how often you should be receiving routine treatments to maintain the results.

    Myth: Botox® just treats wrinkles.

Researchers actually discovered back in the 1950s that injecting a small amount of botulinum toxin type A (what we now refer to as Botox®) into hyperactive muscles relaxed them. In the 1980s, the FDA approved using it on humans for treating everything from facial spasms to vocal spasms. It wasn’t until later in the 1990s that doctors noticed the effect Botox® had on facial wrinkles. (And would you believe that when that discovery was made that there was actually a DROUGHT on Botox® for a time?)

Today Botox® has become the duct tape of the medical field. The FDA has approved it for 10 uses in the U.S., including treating crow’s feet, frown lines, crossed eyes, uncontrollable blinking, chronic migraines, neck spasms, and excessive sweating.

Myth: Botox® is just for women.

Well this is definitely not true! According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 400,000 men received Botox injections in 2014, a 337% increase since 2000. Those numbers are only expected to continue rising.

    Crows feet male

Myth: You are never too young for Botox®.

Although people are starting preventative Botox® in their mid to late twenties, there IS such thing as being too young for Botox®. Teenagers who are a decade away from developing wrinkles definitely fall into that category! Most doctors won’t even consider a patient under the age of 18 without parental consent.

If you are interested in learning more about Botox® and whether or not you might be an ideal candidate, contact us today at 303-305-4343 or We are happy to meet with you to discuss your best options.

  • What is the difference between BOTOX and dermal fillers?

“Ugh, where did that come from?!”

Has that thought ever crossed your mind as you looked in the mirror in the morning?

Wrinkles. They can appear on your forehead, in between or at the corner of your eyes, around your mouth… It can be extremely frustrating, especially if you’re working diligently to prevent them with quality products.

Fortunately, they aren’t something you have to just live with. These lines can be eliminated without surgery thanks to BOTOX and dermal fillers.

But which is the best? And what is the difference between the two injectable treatments?

What is the difference between BOTOX and dermal fillers?

BOTOX is so common today that it’s actually a household name, but do you actually know how the injections work?

botox-1BOTOX injections are designed to block the signals from the nerves of the muscles that cause frown lines and crow’s feet. By blocking the muscle contractions from frowning and squinting and temporarily paralyzing the muscle’s movements, BOTOX can temporarily smooth facial wrinkles and improve your appearance.  The keyword in that sentence is temporarily. BOTOX typically lasts anywhere from three to six months and the results start to appear within days. Learn more about BOTOX in Denver.

Dermal fillers actually refer to a range of products, each with its own different, unique attributes and they typically work in two ways: to plump and lift the skin, replacing collagen loss, and to stimulate the body to produce more of its own collagen.

Like BOTOX, dermal fillers can be used to smooth wrinkles; however, it is designed to do so by lifting the skin and adding volume to the face. Fillers don’t block nerve signals and prevent muscle contractions. Also, unlike BOTOX, which typically doesn’t last more than 6 months, dermal fillers can last up to a year or two, depending on the filler you choose.

BOTOX typically works best for dynamic wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that appear when you animate your face, such as the lines between your eyebrows when you frown, the lines the appear on your forehead when you raise your eyebrows or even the crow’s feet that appear at the corner of your eyes when you smile.

belotero2Fillers, on the other hand, are designed to enhance volume and treat static wrinkles, such as moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Static wrinkles can be seen when you’re at rest, although they may increase in severity when you move your facial muscles. While they have multiple causes, they are typically the result of a loss of volume in the face from aging. Fillers can be used to augment the lips, treat lines around the lips, or even add volume to the back of the hands.

    Which treatment is best?

This is definitely a question best discussed with your physician. The best treatment is entirely dependent on your unique situation, such as where the wrinkles are and what is causing them. Both BOTOX and dermal fillers can be extremely effective treatments and have proven results. Depending on the location of the wrinkles, your physician may even choose to use a combination of BOTOX AND dermal fillers to achieve the best possible results. Check out some of the great results patients have had with BOTOX.

  • Which Dermal Filler is Right for You?

No matter how proactive you are about taking care of your skin, from wearing sunscreen to using anti-aging moisturizers, chances are that at least a few wrinkles have made their way onto your face. Fortunately is a simple, non-invasive solution to treating those wrinkles: dermal fillers!

Dermal fillers are so effective that they are often referred to as a liquid facelift. While they are a temporary solution for wrinkles, they are a much more cost-effective solution that can literally be performed over your lunch hour. See some of the great results others have had with injectable fillers.

Dermal fillers are designed to  add volume and decrease wrinkles from the cheeks to the chin, including:

    • Nasolabial folds (“smile lines”)
    • Around the mouth and lips
    • In the lips (for augmentation)
    • Mid Cheek areas

However, even though they treat wrinkles in a variety of locations on the face, different fillers are made of different substances, which mean some work better to fill specific areas of the face than others.

If you are looking to minimize the appearance of wrinkles, the best solution is to set up a consultation with AOB to determine which filler will best meet your need. That said, here are a few examples of dermal fillers that are available and the areas of the face where they can perform the best:

    Belotero Balance®

Belotero Balance® is made of hyaluronic acid. It is designed to fill in wrinkles and folds by binding with water, allowing for an almost immediate correction. While some fillers are best for rebuilding volume in the face, Belotero Balance® is designed to treat moderate-to-severe lines and wrinkles like vertical lip lines.

Juvederm® is a gel filler is designed to treat moderate to severe wrinkles and folds, especially around the nose and mouth. Juvederm Voluma® XC, on the other hand, is designed for deep injection in the cheek to treat volume loss. Learn more about Juvederm® in Denver.

If you're looking for a good filler for treating nasolabial folds, "smile lines," or facial acne scars on the cheek, Bellafill® may be a good choice. This filler is FDA-approved for treating smile lines and pitted acne scars on the cheeks.  Bellafill is also the only dermal filler that is designed to last safely for five years, making it a far more permanent solution than other fillers.

Radiesse® is intended to correct volume loss in the back of the hands as well as smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Radiesse® injections can help stimulate collagen production more than the hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm® and Restylane®.

Restylane® is designed to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds by adding volume. It also can be used for lip augmentation or to treat lip lines in patients over 21.

As you can see, there are a LOT of different dermal fillers on the market and each one is a little different, from how fast they can produce results to the location and severity of wrinkles they best treat. The best solution is to speak to an experienced physician who can help guide you toward the right solution for your goals and ensure you have realistic expectations for the results.
