Peel to Reveal!

The following blog post was written by Catherine Moede, an AOB home office team member and Denver transplant who spends countless hours outside. She enjoys running, mountain climbing and playing rugby with Black Ice Rugby here in Denver. Over the next couple of months Catherine will be getting chemical peels to help correct some of her sun damage and will writing about her experience at AOB Med Spa throughout the process!

I am 24.  I am an athlete.  I am at high risk for skin cancer.

Countless hours of my childhood (and adulthood) were spent outdoors.  During the summers, I split my time between the tennis courts and swimming pool every Monday through Friday. Despite my mother’s diligent sunscreen application, I was overexposed to sun and have a significant amount of sun damage for someone my age.

In the last several months I have taken a more active approach to taking care of my skin.  I recently got a Reveal photo taken that was able to show me what my skin looks like beneath the surface. A Reveal is a high tech facial imaging system and it is able to show you 3D images of sun damage and vascular damage beneath the skin. When I saw my reveal photo I was SHOCKED by the amount of skin damage that I have at 24.  It was certainly not what I was expecting.  With skin cancer running in my family, I am now more motivated than ever to protect my skin and get treatments to correct some of the existing damage.

After seeing the damage underneath the surface of my skin, I have decided to go through a series of skincare treatments that will help to correct some of the damage that has been done.  Over the next several months I will be getting a series of chemical peels and tracking my skin progress using the hashtag #Peel2Reveal.

I have never gotten a chemical peel before and even just the name sounds scary to someone who has always tried to go the all-natural route in terms of skincare.  However, after talking to my Aesthetician, Shanna at AOB Lone Tree, I have decided to give it a try.

I started out by getting a micro peel for my first treatment, which is a very light peel.  The peel is glycolic, which helps to hydrate the skin and is great for anti-aging.  As a light peel, the changes in the skin happen on a micro cellular level, which means that the visible eye may not be able to see the changes occurring.  The peel removes the dead skin and helps new skin come to the surface for an overall brighter look and feel in the skin.  This particular peel helps with anti-aging and hyper pigmentation.  It also smooths and brightens the skin.

During the treatment I felt heat on the surface of my skin as the chemicals worked their magic.  Immediately after the treatment, my skin looked a little pinker than usual, but I felt refreshed.

I was expecting to experience a very visible surface level peel, but I was pleasantly surprised with the results.  Because of the turnover of cells happens on a micro cellular level, and I had no downtime after the treatment!  This was great, especially because I had a date a few days later and didn’t have to worry about intense peeling.  In the days following the treatment my skin looked brighter and felt refreshed.  In a few weeks I am going back in for a follow up treatment and I am looking forward to getting my next peel!
